Advent Calendar using Swirlydoos Kits

Hi, everyone! Even though the holidays are over, I've made an Advent calendar using the "All That Glitters" kit, along with some items from my stash and past kits. I love, love, love, the blues and pinks!

The Advent calendar is from Kaisercraft. It's so funny- I thought that this Advent house was super awesome because it has all that extra space at the top, and I ASSUMED it was going to open up, which is ideal for giving the kids larger candies some days! Boy was I WRONG- The top of the house didn't open at all! That just would not do, so I modified it! I sanded the parts that would have normally been glued together on one side, and went to Lowe's and grabbed a small pair of hinges to create an opening at the top.

And this is what the inside of that opening looks like. I added some poinsettias from past Swirlydoos Christmas kits, as well some cotton fluff for the floor. Now, I have a space for larger Advent gifts, and no one is happier about that than my littles!

Here's what the other side that doesn't open looks like:

I added some of the foil ornaments from the specialty paper, and some pearl strands. I kept the design of the boxes pretty basic, using Tim Holtz metal number circles. The frame is from the dollar bin at Michaels- I used two different embossing powders on it to achieve that effect. The image inside the frame is from the kit papers.

Here are the view from the sides:

The side without any boxes had a Memory Box window die, and a Tim Holtz metal wreath from a  past kit.

Swirlydoos Kit Club Tutorial: Comparing Pastels and Gelatos

Happy Saturday! For those celebrating Christmas, I hope your holiday was wonderful, and that you can sneak in some tutorial viewing today!

We recently received oil pastels in a project kit, we've had some people ask about what the difference between pastels and gelatos are. So, I decided to do a comparison video of the two media so you can see the differences. Check out the video here:

Untitled Layout using Prima Pastiche Papers

Today I'm sharing a layout I made using loads of Prima goodies for a couple of challenges. It's for the round robin challenge at Swirlydoos, and also the December Prima Product Pick challenge.

I loved the blues and red combo of the PPP this month!

And here's what came up with:

Thanks, Miss Kathi for your beautiful inspiration for the round robin challenge!

I used an older collection, Pastiche, for most of the papers and I also used some Stationer's Desk paper for some reds, and the  Finnabair Vintage Vanity paper pad to get some variety of blues.

Here's a closeup that shows the Prima different flowers I used:

I used some Prima Bloom sprays in Glistening Waves and Frost which you can see in this pick. And, some of the blue wired cord, and the new patina metal trinket leaves. And, I found some blue pearls from the "e." line in my stash to add to the doily die cuts.

Here's a couple of closeups showing all the different layers.

Thanks for looking!

Never miss one of our kits again!

We have some absolutely beautiful scrapbook projects for you to see today!!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this kit! The pinks and blues make these papers so magical!

Here's what I've done with the kit, so far:

First, I started with our fabulous December sketch by Beggahuna!

How beautiful is that? Here's my take on it:

I started with using the stencil and snowflake paste that came in the mediums add on on the left and bottom of the paper, then distressed the edges and inked them with two pink distress inks. In this closeup, you can see the snowflake paste- it's gorgeous! AND, look at that little snow fairy! I purchased that from Angelica's etsy shop. I also used some pink glitter alphas from my stash from the title.

Instead of adding pictures in the squares in the sketch, I decided to just use those for layers. I also used the snowflake dies from the die add on under the squares and added pink pearls from the embellishment add on.  Then, I cut out an ornament from one of the papers to use a photo mat over the squares.
The circles that look white are actually little mirrors from the kit. They are very difficult to photograph, but well worth putting on, and they look amazing in real life!

I finished off the layout by adding some tiny snowflake stamping with pink chalk ink, then splatted some diluted gesso over it.

Next, I made this layout:

I went with a more classic looking design for this picture, and I really love how the Blue Fern Studios winter dangles chipboard pieces look. I did lots to them!

First, I painted them with gesso, and each dangle got it's own unique treatment. There are a few different shades of blue on these papers and also the flowers, so I used a few different blue products.

I used blue chalk ink  to accent the heart and bows. The star was painted with the dimensional paint from the main kit. Both of these were then painted with clear Gimmer Glam for an extreme glittery look.

I used distress ink on the snowflake. All of the dangles have pearl accents from the main kit also.

And, next I have these hanging ornaments I made from this month's project add on:

There are many more details in my video tutorial that you can see here:

Thanks for checking out my projects!

More Scarlet Elegance projects for Swirlydoos Kit Club

I have loved working with the Scarlet Elegance kit! The colors are amazing! I've made a couple more projects with it, and I'm sharing them today.

"Eleven" Layout

I love the slight blue accents of the kit, and I wanted to use that with the gorgeous pinks and black highlights.

I started with my large layers with border punching the black paper, then adding some wet distressing on the edges of the Prima paper, and then using grey distress ink along the edges. I also used a large script stamp to poke out from the design layers.

I used a couple of doilies from my stash, and centered them with some of the pink brick wall paper, and again added some grey distress ink to tone the pink and the white. The pink wood paper strips have the same treatment.

From there, I started tucking in the Kaisercraft collectibles from the embellishment add on, picking the ones with the pretty blue floral accents. I colored the wood fern from the embellishment add on with different chalk inks to match the leaves on the paper.

I used a chipboard corner flourish from my stash that I inked black, added some pink flowers, and finally cut up the pink bling strip for some small accents.

"Love" Mini Album (Cover)

So, I'm not finished with the inside yet, but the cover is done!

I started by placing that "Love" sticker on the cover. Then, I added some ivy stenciling with the white crackle paste from the mediums add on. Once dry, I painted it with some green mist. I did this on my other projects too- it's just the perfect accent! And, those antique red Petaloo dogwood flowers from the flower add on are so beautiful, I had to add them too. :) I used some green pearls from a past kit also.

This part of the design is stuff from my stash, but it went so well with the design I had in mind, that I just had to use it! I inked the doily with grey chalk ink. The dressform is a wooden flourish from Kaisercraft that I inked with black archival ink in a distressed fashion. Then I finished it off using some scraps- a small piece of lace, and a pearl strip remnant.

I added the black lace form the main kit, and layered it with some cord fro the project add on, and completed the look by stamping the edges with a chicken wire stamp.

I'm looking forward to finishing this album up soon.

Thanks for taking a look at my projects today!

Never miss one of our kits again!

We have some absolutely beautiful scrapbook projects for you to see today !!

I have three layouts to share today!

"She" Layout

This layout is based on the monthly sketch.  I used the Prima white crackle and stencil from the mediums add on to add to the flower clusters. I painted the crackled ivy with some green mist.

I used more of the crackle paste, mixed with the pink mica powder from the mediums, and used a heart stencil from my stash. The pink mica really compliments the other pinks in the kit!

You can also see a close up of the edge of the circle- I used the die on the month (borders) and used a mitering technique to border a the circles.

Here's another closeup showing the ivy stencil. I also painted the leaves in the flower cluster to make them coordinate better with the ivy.

"Treasured" Layout

This is one of my favorite pictures that I want to hang up, so I used neutral colors to go with my home decor. This is a picture of me and Kim taken a few years ago at a Swirly camp.

I started out by fussy cutting around the edges of the quarterfoil design. It was a lot of work, but I love the result! I added a few techniques to this page. After cutting, I went over all of the pink parts with grey distress ink to tone down the pink. I added some script stamping. Then, I used the white crackle with a stencil from my stash.

The black flowers are from a past kit, and the gold ones are older Prima from my stash. I used gesso on them for a muted and distressed look.

I used Frantage aged black embossing powder on the lamp post- I love the silver and gold!

 "Delight" Layout

This layout is roughly based on a past kit sketch from the Sweetest Thing kit a couple of years ago.

I cut the clock from the chipboard that came in the kit. It had a border, but I wanted to add some green to my page, so I used a die to cut this circle frame from cardstock from the kit to ink it just the right color to match the wood leaves from the embellishment add on that I painted using a mist.
I cut the black scalloped border using the die set from the kit this month. I also used the white crackle and stencil from the medium add on for the bricks.

Thanks for checking out my projects today!

We have some absolutely beautiful scrapbook projects for you to see today !!

"Dreams Layout" (Based on the Monthly Sketch)

I used the monthly sketch for this layout, and I kept it pretty similar to the design. As soon as I saw the balloon on the paper, I knew I would have to cut that out for this sketch! I also added a script stencil to follow the sketch, and chose while to have it blend with the design. I added blue and peach splatters from the mists in the mediums add on. I also used the peach mist on the darker flowers- LOVELY color!

The green foliage is from a Memory Box die, and cut from some green cardstock in the cardstock add on. I also added some glass pearls from my stash to the floral clusters. The title is also from things I had lying around.

"Happy Layout"

I LOVE this picture of my friends kids. They are so happy!

I decided to keep with the fussy cut idea again for this layout, but this time, I just cut around the images on the page so I could tuck in other layers. I added a couple of doilies from my stash, one circle, the other a square that you can see as the purple border. Those aren't easy to find, but you could easily just use a border punch for a similar effect.

The top right corner cluster includes a die cut I made using this month's die of the month from Spellbinders. The title is a piece of Blue Fern chipboard from my stash.

I used a "distressed watercolor" technique on the chipboard swirlies, using a combination of gesso, embossing powder, and mists.

"Family Time" Frame

For this frame, I used mists, gesso, and chalk inks to achieve this finish, and I have a video on how you can do the same right here:

"Peekaboo" Layout

This month, our Swirly Girl Challenge (SGC) is "Changes" being hosted by subscriber, Paula, and she is asking us to re-do one of our first layouts. I immediately thought of this one:
So, I started by pulling off that picture and editing it by cropping and doing some color tweaking to make it match the blues and greens from the kit paper.

I tried to keep this as flat as possible, because I want to replace the old one in an old post-bound album. I used a Sizzix frame from my stash to mat the photo, and I glued it to a lighter paper and fussy cut a shadow for it. I added some elements (bird and keyhole) from the main kit. I also added some Blue Fern mini flourishes from a special order we had at Swirlydoos a while back. And the "hanging" foliage at the top right is a PoppyStamps die.

You have until midnight, eastern time, October 23rd to complete the hop. Winners will be announced on the Swirlydoos Blog on 10/25.  In order to qualify to win here is what you need to do:

Never miss one of our kits again!

I was super excited to get the Moment in Time kit! It has my favorite color combos and the Kaisercraft paper is PERFECT! I dug right in!

"Adventure Awaits" Layout

This cute boy in the picture is my sweet, sweet Elijah. This page is made using only products from the MAIN KIT. I did use some dies and my own media. I have a complete step-by-step tutorial with TONS of pictures on the new Swirlydoos Snapguide account. You can view the tutorial HERE

"Remember" Layout

This is my take on the monthly sketch.
This pictures are of my gal, Audra. It was school picture day, and she wasn't getting hers done until the end of the day, so I thought I would snap some pics of those lovely locks in case the curls didn't hold that long. :)

I tucked some border punch strips in between some of the layers. I also used an older Prima stencil and some white embossing paste under the design, then added some stamping. It's not my normal style, but I thought I would try it out. I added some of the bling along the edging of the stencil and over the stamping.

The black vine is a die cut from a Kaisercraft die that I bought from the Swirlydoos store some time ago. Any vine die or chipboard from your stash would do the job. The title is also a piece of chipboard from my stash, but you could easily make your own title from alphas or other chipboard you have on hand.

"This Special Moment" Layout

HOLY LAYERS! I kind of went nuts with the layers on this layout! This is actually going to go in a frame and hang on the wall. Blue and brown are my home decor colors, so I'm picking and making layouts to go up on the wall. I knew I would have a ton of extra space for this one, so I just popped every layer for a lot of dimension.

I used the collectible gear die cuts in between the layers, and some metal gears from my stash. I also used a new brick stencil and some black embossing paste I had on hand to create this look. Any brick stamp or stencil would work to get the same effect.

I broke up the Prima metal piece that came in the embellishment add on and added them to the flower cluster. I created a patina look by adding some Silks paints in green, blue, and gold. I also used this same techinque on all of the metal.

"A Moment in Time" Altered Clock

This is my clock that I made using this month's project add on kit. I'll be sharing my process video on how I created this on Saturday, October 3rd, on the Swirlydoos YouTube channel, so be sure to check it out!

Thanks for checking out my projects, and I know you will be amazed at the other ladies' fantastic creations, so keep hopping along!
